South Africa’s captive lion breeding industry has resulted in the establishment of trade networks between Africa and Asia for lion body parts, and is also associated with significant animal welfare concerns. The SPCA in South Africa has been working tirelessly to push for the closure of this nefarious industry, and LRF issued a grant to support their efforts to continue to lobby government to ensure the rapid closure of the industry and closure of trade in lion body parts, and to monitor captive lion facilities to minimise animal welfare concerns. The primary purpose of this investment is to work towards stemming trade in lion body parts between South Africa and Asia. If this trade were to proliferate, it would pose a risk to wild populations by creating demand for body parts from wild lions.
